Astrology Glossary

Words that clarify the sky

Astrology becomes easier to study when a term tells you exactly what kind of thing you are discussing. This glossary separates bodies, calculated points, coordinate systems, and interpretive ideas, with examples that connect back to the other volumes. The definitions mainly follow Western usage and identify places where conventions differ. Read it as a reference when a word interrupts your understanding, or browse gradually to practise explaining chart language without turning a technical label into a claim about a person.

A clear definition gives a question somewhere to begin without pretending that the word contains the whole answer.

Chapter 2

Using this glossary

Turn a word into understanding

Start with the word that interrupts a lesson. Ask whether it names an object, a calculated position, a way of dividing the chart, or an interpretation. A planet, an Ascendant, a house system, and a claim about confidence belong to different categories, even when they occur in the same sentence. Try explaining a definition without using the original term. For an orb, you might describe how far a pair of positions lies from a chosen exact angle. Then add a small example: 93 degrees is three degrees from a square. This tests understanding more effectively than repeating a phrase about energy. Return to the relevant volume for context. Short definitions are useful doorways, but they cannot replace the distinctions and practical examples that make a technique understandable.

Chapter 3

When definitions differ

Read the convention as well

Astrology has many historical and contemporary traditions. A familiar term may carry different rules in each: a stellium can require different numbers of planets, an orb can depend on the method, and house boundaries can change with the system. A difference is worth recording before trying to resolve it. When comparing sources, note the tradition, the actual rule, and what follows from using it. Distinguish an alternative definition from a calculation error. For example, calling Saturn Aquarius’s traditional ruler and Uranus its modern ruler identifies two conventions rather than two measurements of the same object. Keep interpretive language conditional. A definition can tell you what a Saturn return is geometrically, but it cannot tell you which responsibilities, opportunities, or difficulties a particular person will face during it.

Entries

Ascendant

A precise point on the horizon

The exact point where the zodiac meets the eastern horizon at a chart’s time and location. Its sign is the rising sign. For example, 18 degrees of Libra is an Ascendant position; Libra alone names its sign. A reliable birth time is needed to establish it.

Entries

Aspect

Geometry and its interpretation

An angular relationship between chart positions, usually measured along the zodiac. A square centres on 90 degrees and a trine on 120. The angle is calculated; interpreting it as friction or cooperation belongs to an astrological tradition and depends on the factors involved.

Entries

Birth Chart

The recorded sky at birth

A chart calculated for a birth time and place, also called a natal chart. It records positions that astrologers interpret symbolically. Zodiac and house-system settings should be noted alongside the birth details, especially when comparing charts from different sources.

Entries

Cadent House

Following the sustaining houses

One of the third, sixth, ninth, or twelfth houses, each following a succedent house in the cycle. Modern teaching often connects the group with processing and transition. Cadent is a house category, not another name for a mutable sign or a judgement about personal weakness.

Entries

Cardinal

A symbolic way of beginning

The initiating modality in Western sign symbolism. Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn are cardinal signs. Proposing a workable first step illustrates the theme, but any person can initiate something; the label describes a symbolic style rather than an exclusive capacity.

Entries

Cusp

Boundaries need precise positions

A boundary, most commonly the beginning of a house. In whole-sign houses, sign boundaries also define houses. Being born near a Sun-sign boundary does not create a Sun occupying two signs at once; calculate its position if the date or time makes the sign uncertain.

Entries

Descendant

Across from the eastern doorway

The zodiac point opposite the Ascendant, on the western horizon. Modern Western readings associate it with meeting others and partnership. It marks the seventh-house cusp in many systems; in whole-sign houses it is a degree within the seventh sign-house.

Entries

Dignity

Condition within a traditional method

A traditional way of describing a planet’s condition within an astrological method. Essential dignities include sign-based relationships such as domicile and exaltation; accidental dignity concerns other circumstances, such as house position. Neither measures the worth, morality, or competence of a person.

Entries

Element

Four symbolic orientations

One of the four symbolic categories Fire, Earth, Air, and Water, each shared by three zodiac signs. Elements offer different questions about inspiration, practical engagement, ideas, and feeling. They are not chemical classifications or a test of which human abilities someone possesses.

Entries

Empty House

Unoccupied does not mean absent

A house containing none of the planets or points selected for the chart. It still has a sign and a ruler to study. An empty seventh house, for example, does not mean partnership is absent or unavailable; occupation is only one route into interpretation.

Entries

Exaltation

A traditional place of honour

A traditional essential dignity that treats a planet as honoured in a particular sign. For example, Venus is exalted in Pisces in the Western table. Exaltation differs from rulership and does not guarantee an easy life or a superior expression of the planet’s themes.

Entries

Fixed

The work of sustaining

The sustaining modality of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. Its symbolism concerns continuity, concentration, and persistence. It can frame a question about what is worth maintaining without proving that someone is stubborn or unable to adapt.

Entries

Glyph

Read the chart’s shorthand

A written symbol used as shorthand for a sign, planet, or aspect. For example, ☉ represents the Sun. Check the chart’s legend because symbols and display conventions can vary, especially for additional bodies or less commonly used aspects.

Entries

House

An area within a system

One of twelve chart divisions associated with areas of life. House assignment depends on birth time, place, and the chosen division system. A house is not inherently the sign with the same number: the first house is not automatically Aries.

Entries

Imum Coeli

The angle opposite the Midheaven

The IC, the zodiac point opposite the Midheaven on the lower part of the local meridian. Western readings connect it with roots and private foundations. It marks the fourth-house cusp in quadrant systems, but need not do so in whole-sign or equal houses.

Entries

Luminary

Two lights, different bodies

A collective astrological term for the Sun and Moon. They have different astronomical identities: the Sun is a star and the Moon Earth’s natural satellite. Grouping them as luminaries or including them in planetary tables does not change those categories.

Entries

Midheaven

An angle of public visibility

The MC, where the zodiac meets the upper part of the local meridian. Modern readings connect it with public contribution and visibility. It defines the tenth cusp in quadrant house systems, while whole-sign and equal houses keep it as a separate calculated angle.

Entries

Modality

Three approaches to movement

One of three symbolic modes associated with signs: cardinal begins, fixed sustains, and mutable adapts. Combining a modality with an element gives a sign’s basic pattern, such as fixed Earth for Taurus. It describes a style to explore rather than a behaviour that must occur.

Entries

Moon Sign

A placement with timing needs

The sign containing the Moon at birth in the chosen zodiac. Modern interpretation uses it to explore responses and care. If the Moon changed signs on the birth date and the time is uncertain, the placement may need to remain unresolved.

Entries

Mutable

The work of adapting

The adapting modality of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. Its symbolism includes revising, translating, and responding to changing circumstances. Altering a plan after useful feedback is one example; the label does not imply that someone lacks commitment.

Entries

Natal

Relating to the birth record

Relating to birth. A natal position belongs to the birth chart, whereas a transit describes a moving body’s position, often compared with that chart. A natal Mercury retrograde and a current Mercury retrograde are therefore separate observations.

Entries

Node

A point rather than a body

An intersection of an orbital plane with a reference plane. The lunar nodes mark where the Moon’s orbital path crosses the ecliptic northward or southward. They are calculated points, not bodies; growth or karmic readings are interpretations belonging to particular traditions.

Entries

Orb

A tolerance you can state

The distance from an exact aspect, or the permitted tolerance used to recognise that aspect. A 94-degree separation has a four-degree orb from a square. Allowed limits differ between methods and should be stated before deciding which aspects to include.

Entries

Outer Planet

An astrological category with limits

In modern astrology, commonly Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, read through broad collective or generational themes. This grouping differs from astronomy’s use of outer planets and retains Pluto despite its dwarf-planet classification. Slow movement means many people share a sign placement.

Entries

Personal Planet

Check which bodies are included

Usually Mercury, Venus, and Mars; many modern astrologers also include the Sun and Moon in this interpretive group. It concerns everyday functions such as learning, relating, and acting. Check which factors an author includes before comparing totals or claims about emphasis.

Entries

Planet

Astronomy and astrological shorthand

An astronomical category and, more loosely, an astrological grouping of symbolic functions. Astrology often includes the Sun and Moon in planetary discussion, although they are a star and a satellite. Read the category alongside the individual entry rather than assuming all listed factors are the same kind of object.

Entries

Retrograde

Apparent direction from Earth

Apparent backward motion against the zodiac from Earth’s viewpoint. It arises from relative orbital motion rather than a planet reversing its orbit. Modern astrologers often use it as a metaphor for review, but that interpretation is separate from the calculated direction.

Entries

Rising Sign

The sign of the Ascendant

The sign containing the Ascendant at a given time and place. Often used loosely as a synonym for Ascendant, it technically names the sign rather than the exact degree. Knowing a Sun sign does not establish a rising sign.

Entries

Rulership

Follow a named convention

An assigned relationship between a planet and a zodiac sign, also called domicile. Traditional Western astrology gives Saturn rulership of Capricorn and Aquarius; modern approaches often add Uranus for Aquarius. Name the convention, particularly when following a house ruler through a chart.

Entries

Saturn Return

A return to natal longitude

A transit in which Saturn reaches its natal zodiac longitude again, roughly every 29.5 years. Apparent retrograde motion can produce more than one exact contact in a return period. Modern themes of maturity and responsibility are interpretive prompts, not a schedule of required life events.

Entries

Sign

An equal division of the zodiac

One of twelve equal 30-degree divisions of a zodiac, interpreted as a symbolic style. A sign is not a planet, a house, or the same boundary as an astronomical constellation. Its position depends on whether the tropical or a particular sidereal framework is used.

Entries

Solar Return

A moment near the birthday

The moment the transiting Sun returns to its natal zodiac longitude, and a chart calculated for that moment. It occurs around a birthday but not necessarily at the birth clock time or on the same calendar date. Annual interpretations are symbolic, not guaranteed forecasts.

Entries

Stellium

Define before counting

A grouping of several planets in one sign or house. Definitions vary over number, included bodies, and closeness; some require three planets and others four. List the actual placements before relying on the label, which does not itself specify one aspect angle.

Entries

Succedent House

Following the angular houses

One of the second, fifth, eighth, or eleventh houses, each following an angular house. Modern teaching often links them with sustaining and developing resources. Succedent is a position within the house cycle, not a synonym for a fixed sign.

Entries

Sun Sign

One placement within a chart

The sign occupied by the Sun at birth in the chosen zodiac. Modern Western interpretation links it with purpose and self-expression. Popular date ranges are approximate; near a boundary, use a calculation for the year and time instead of assuming the calendar label is exact.

Entries

Transit

The current sky in comparison

A moving celestial body’s position, often considered in relation to a natal chart. Transiting Saturn square natal Venus compares a current position with a birth position. The geometry can be calculated; any interpretation about relationships or values remains a separate proposition.

Entries

Zodiac

A framework for locating positions

The coordinate framework astrology divides into twelve equal signs. The tropical zodiac begins at the March equinox; sidereal systems use a stellar reference with differing conventions for the offset. Named constellations have unequal boundaries and should not be treated as these equal sign divisions.
